Refer a Student to Academic Coaching
Do you know a student who could benefit from meeting with an academic coach? Students at any level (undergraduate, graduate, or professional) can work one-on-one with an academic coach to identify and pursue goals related to learning and thriving academically at Stanford. Whether students need quick help with a specific academic skill or they're looking to build effective habits for the long term, academic coaches provide guidance, accountability, and encouragement.
When should I refer a student to Academic Coaching?
Academic coaches help students develop strategies for learning and working effectively, managing their time, and increasing their sense of purpose and motivation as students. Students can come with a specific goal in mind, or they can explore potential goals with their coach. Not sure if Academic Coaching is the right fit? Academic coaches are trained to connect students with other campus resources as needed.
If you’ve observed any of the following situations among students that you’ve worked with, they might benefit from meeting with an academic coach:
- Time management challenges and/or procrastination (e.g. starting assignments last-minute, submitting work late, not finishing readings/preparation before class)
- Having trouble focusing during class
- Conveying a sense of being overwhelmed with everything they need to do
- Doing well on homework assignments but it’s not translating into exam performance
- Challenges comprehending or retaining what they have read
- Difficulty breaking down a paper or project into manageable tasks
- Learning challenges related to neurodiversity (ADHD, learning disabilities/differences, autism, and/or executive functioning challenges)
- For doctoral students - challenges related to progressing on milestone projects (qualifying exams, dissertation, etc.); communicating effectively with their advisor, PI, and/or dissertation committee; managing experiments or multiple projects
