Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are invited to apply to work as a Peer Learning Consultant in the Special Projects division. PLCs in the Strategy and Operations Division will be responsible for the creation, administration, and development of specialized projects within the Peer Learning Consultant Program, with each PLC chosen for oversight of a specific project. The Special Projects Division offers interested students the opportunity to set their own schedules and freedom to pursue independent work, as well as assigned tasks, that are both relevant to programmatic needs and their personal expertise, all in the spirit of continuous improvement of the PLCP. Current examples of roles that fall under the Special Projects Division include Graphic Designer, Frontend Web Developer, and Internal Communiations Strategist.

Frontend Web Developer

Summary

The Frontend Web Developer provides the technical know-how to the Strategy and Operations division to build both internal-facing tools and web apps, as well as student- and community-facing tools, in close collaboration with other division members (e.g., the internal communications strategist) below.

What you'll do - sample projects

  1. Skills assessment app – fun, interactive quiz to recommend resources & CTL programming on a per-student basis
  2. Data analysis app and refinement – synthesize CTL data collected into easy-to-use dashboards / web pages to better understand how we serve students; update features as needed
  3. Workflow web app – web app to walk newer members step-by-step through processes, automating pieces of our workflow(s) as appropriate
  4. Independent work, if desired, to continually improve the program’s data, design, management, website, and processes – including pairing with the Graphic Designer, Internal Communications Strategist, community partners, etc.

Compensation and hourly requirements

Compensation for this role begins at $21/hour for undergraduate students. Work will be primarily asynchronous and flexible, where requirements will be completed based on division member’s availability with support and accountability through regular meetings with the division lead and other supporting program members.

Estimated weekly work time will be 4-8 hours per week. There may be some variance in hours depending on division member’s preference and requests our program receives, but our goal is to have a relatively consistent number of hours per week so division members can plan ahead.

Who you are

An undergraduate student at Stanford University with: 

  • experience with programming in Python, Javascript, HTML/CSS, or similar languages
  • expertise and/or interest in data visualization and web development
  • excellent time management skills, and 
  • the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate or co-term student (graduate and professional students are not eligible for this role)
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall
  • Must have a strong commitment to helping peers learn
  • Must possess outstanding interpersonal skills, time management skills, and attention to detail

Internal Communications Strategist

Summary

The Internal Communications Strategist collects, gathers, and synthesizes information from program members and student/community members alike to ensure web apps and tools are streamlined, accessible, and address the most compelling student needs, in close collaboration with other division members such as the Frontend Web Developer above.

What you'll do - sample projects

  1. Study partner matching – gather information through interviews and research on best practices for study group formation (customized to Stanford student needs)
  2. Workflow web app – explore pain points of current PLC members to understand how we can improve processes in future, and work with Frontend Web Developer to prioritize features and pieces of our work that can be automated
  3. Standardize workshop documentation and materials – interpret data collected by the program to understand where our workshops and programming can be improved, standardized and customized to better support student needs and expand our reach on campus
  4. Independent work, if desired, to continually improve the program’s data, design, management, website, and processes – including pairing with the Graphic Designer, Frontend Web Developer, community partners, etc.

Graphic Designer

What you'll do:

  • Developing social media content (both brainstorming and generating new content, in collaboration with a professional staff member and a student social media specialist, as well as designing corresponding graphics) 
  • Establishing a strong brand identity for the PLC program 
  • Creation of new logos, branding materials, and other graphic elements used in advertising events and the PLC program for a variety of audiences (all students, outside organizations, graduates, undergraduates, various departments, etc.) 
  • Improving UI/UX experience on the PLCP website 
  • Reviewing proposed content and providing feedback on its suitability for target audience, its design, etc. 
  • Independent work, if desired, to continually improve the program’s design, management, social media strategy, and website 
  • Additional design work, partnership-building, and project/program management as requested by Lead Learning Consultants

Compensation and hourly requirements:

Compensation for this role begins at $18/hour for undergraduate students and $28/hour for graduate students. Work will be primarily asynchronous and flexible, with the Graphic Designer able to set hours as needed to complete work ahead of deadlines; requirements will be completed based on division member’s availability, with support and accountability provided through regular meetings with the division lead and other supporting program members.

Estimated weekly work time will be 4-8 hours per week. There may be some variance in hours depending on division member’s preference and requests our program receives, but our goal is to have a relatively consistent number of hours per week so division members can plan ahead. 

Who You are: 

  • An undergraduate or graduate student at Stanford University with: 
    • interest and/or experience in design, especially UI/UX and digital media, interest and/or experience in creating social media content; familiarity with Canva, Picsart, and/or Adobe Photoshop is a plus but not required, 
    • ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, 
    • excellent time management skills, and 
    • the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Co-term and masters students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall; graduate and professional students must be in good standing with their department/program
