Our language conversation partners (LCPs) are excited to meet you to have unstructured and structured conversations in your target language, practice oral drills, and meet someone new who is fluent in the language. Clara Rose Wool Bonaventura

Hello! My name is Clara Rose. I'm a PhD student in Environmental Engineering. I was born in Ottawa, Canada and grew up mainly in Massachusetts, with some shorter time periods spent living in Nicaragua and Spain. I speak Spanish, French and Arabic and am familiar with multiple dialects of Spanish and Arabic. I view secondary language-learning as a valuable tool that promotes personal and societal growth, as well as cross-cultural tolerance. I'm so excited to assist you in your language journey!

I'm Jiyoung Jeong, a junior who grew up in Seoul, Korea and now lives in the Boston area. I'm a conversation partner for Korean and Chinese, and am planning to study Spanish during this upcoming year. Outside of classes, I'm a part of an a cappella group, Habla (a tutoring service for the janitorial staff), SWIB, and enjoy writing poetry and drawing. I'm excited to connect with you through LCP!

My name is Vivian Zhu, and I'm a Freshman from Sydney, Australia. I was born in Hangzhou, China and have always loved all aspects of the Chinese language, from everyday speech to classical literary works. When I’m not learning a language (I have studied French and Latin, and am now studying Korean), I enjoy reading Chinese novels, binging YouTube videos, taking photos, debating, and talking about politics. I am so excited to get to know you and share our love for Chinese!

Hi, I’m Xiaohai, a Junior majoring in Psychology, Cognitive Science track and Computer Science. I am from Chengdu, China, the home of hotpot, Giant pandas and more. I am proficient in both Mandarin and Sichuaneze dialect. I am very interested in consumer electronics, horror/thriller movies, and Nintendo Switch games. Always curious about new things and stories. Hi! My name is Yeh-Tang, and I’m a rising junior planning to major in comparative literature. Aside from Mandarin, my mother tongue, I have studied English, French, and Spanish. I am also desperate to improve my Taiwanese as I often find it difficult to communicate with elderly countrymen who only speak this beautiful language. I am currently a member of Stanford tapTH@T, Les acteurs de société, and Stanford Taiwanese Student Association.

My name is Betsy Kim, and I'm a junior studying economics. I studied French for seven years before living in Paris during my gap year, where I attended the Sorbonne and studied violin performance. I am a proud member of Sigma Psi Zeta sorority, and occasionally I write for The Daily. My interests include lying down and psychoanalyzing reality TV stars.

Hi, my name is Nils and I am a second year Master's student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. I was born from a French mother and a Canadian-French-Swedish father. I lived for 13 years in France and came to California for college. At Stanford, I love playing all kinds of sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, spikeball, etc.), as well as going on hikes and camping trips. Can't wait to get to know you and help you practice my mother tongue!

Sonya Schoenberger

Hi, I’m Sonya, and I’m a second-year PhD student in the Department of History. My interests center on the history of international law, humanitarianism, and environmental movements. I have a particular interest in French empire, and I’ve spent time living in southern France and in Geneva, Switzerland. I miss speaking the language on a regular basis and am excited to converse with French language learners at Stanford!

Hallo, my name is Dagny! I am a current sophomore majoring in Architectural Design. I am originally from Houston, Texas, but my family made frequent trips to Sweden and Denmark when I was growing up, so I have a natural love for Germanic languages, German in particular! During my free time, I love watching classic films, learning about flags, and building models.

Hi, my name is Rachel. I was born and raised in Rockbridge County, Virginia, and I am currently in my second year at Stanford as a PhD student in the Classics department with a focus on Latin poetry of the Augustan and Imperial eras. I love languages in general, and Italian has a special place in my heart as one of Latin’s closest modern relatives. I have lived in Italy at various times for a total of more than two years and studied Italian for about 5 years, and now I am excited to share my experience with you as an LCP here at Stanford!
 

Sara Damore

Hello! I am a second-year master's student in Community Health and Prevention Research. Though my academic and professional career has focused on the sciences, I have always loved languages and the way they influence our experience of the world. I was inspired to become a language tutor in Italian after using the program while studying Portuguese and realizing how helpful and fun language conversation partnering can be. When I'm not behind the computer, you can find me outside exploring the trails near campus or wherever I happen to land!

Hi! My name is Alexis, and I am a PhD student in Iberian and Latin American Cultures with a focus on 20th and 21st-century Latin American literature. After spending my sophomore year of high school as an exchange student in southern Peru, I felt compelled to continue learning about literature and social justice issues in Spanish. Before beginning graduate studies, I also began studying Portuguese. To date, I have taught Spanish and Portuguese at Stanford and am thrilled to continue working with students to improve their confidence in Portuguese and to help find doors to open through language learning. In my free time I like to take walks with friends and family, find dogs to pet, and keep active through dance and yoga.

Nelson Shuchmacher

Hey everyone! My name is Nelson and I am PhD student in Comparative Literature, where I study physics and machines in Renaissance and Baroque Iberian and colonial Latin American texts. I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, and before coming to Stanford I lived in Israel, Germany and Oregon. At Stanford I’ve taught three quarters of Portuguese, a definite highlight of my time here! I am a project manager of Life in Quarantine: Witnessing Global Pandemic, and work with the staff of Stanford’s Global Studies department in the EPIC Fellowship. In my free time I like to practice for and run half-marathons, cook and play with my pug. Finally, I’m a lover of music, basketball and mechanical gadgets, and, most importantly, I am passionate about helping people achieve their potential. I’m beyond excited to be able to share the love for my native language with you!

Being from Puerto Rico, I have been speaking both Spanish and English since I was very young and now I have decided to learn a third language, French. My name is Estefania Ramirez and I am a current sophomore. I am a native Spanish speaker and have studied Italian for about a year. I love traveling so I am interested in majoring in International Relations with a minor in Modern Languages. On campus, I love being involved in Latinx related cultural clubs, some of which include Latinos Unidos, Hermanas, and Ritmo de Stanford. I just spent this summer studying abroad in Chile so if you are interested in doing the same BOSP program I would be happy to talk about my experience with you and even help you brush up on your Spanish!

¡Hola! My name is Jaime and I am a PhD student in Anthropology. I was born and raised in Colombia and before coming to Stanford I conducted research on the memories, politics, and history of Colombia’s armed conflict. In my research I explore how war has produced dispossession and disrupted relationships with soil, water, plants, and animals in rural geographies of the country. I love watching (and talking about) Latin American movies, reading creative writing stories, and learning the art of embroidery. I am learning Portuguese and have greatly improved my speaking skills with the help of the LCPs. ​

I have an immense passion for advancing the conditions of immigrant communities in the US and the Black communities in Latin America. I am planning to major in CSRE with a minor in human rights.
